Speech is of Time: Preface

Posted in Speech is of Time

A man who has made as many speeches and written statements as I have in my various political capacities will, I hope, be excused if he succumbs to the temptation to have some of them given a degree of permanency in book form. Many of my friends have encouraged this notion, with a generous mixture of faith, hope, and charity.

In making a selection, I have sought out from many hundreds those which may in a small way add to the material available to future students of what is now recent or contemporary history, and be of some help to those who fear that the dramatic impact of modern science and technology may distort our sense of social values and further depress those human studies which remain the greatest hope of true civilization. I am grateful to the Editors of The Times and the New York Times Magazine for permission to reprint articles which appeared in their publications.
