  • B A Santamaria put out the first issue of the Catholic Worker, monthly journal of Catholic Action, a movement concerned by what it perceived as a rising tide of Communism.

  • Reg Ansett with StewardessesSeptember: The last known Tasmanian tiger dies in captivity at the Hobart zoo.
  • October: New Zealander Jean Batten arrives in Darwin after a record-breaking solo flight from London in 10 days 21 hours.
  • December: Reginald Ansett wins the Brisbane to Adelaide centenary air race. In February he had formed Ansett Airways Pty Ltd with a one-aircraft air service between Hamilton and Melbourne.
